Why do this?

A question I ask myself, and a question I get asked.

It was October 2006 when I had the idea, and after doing some extensizegoogling on the net. I found that many people have done the trip. So Idefinatly won't be alone.

Its march 12th 2007, with T-50? days.

I have my bike, and am searching now for all the bike acessories that I will need.

Its sometimes becoming overwhelming at the amount of details that need to bedone before the trip.

Tuesday 1.15pm February 27th 2007.

I was on my way to get a hair cut, when I got the call.

It was a nurse from the Emergency hosital in Zoersel Belgium. My mother was emited and was in a coma and on oxygen. So just over 24 hrs later I arrive inthe ICU and see that she was in shock but ok.

My family arrived shortly after, so it was an unexpected family renioun. Fortunatly my mother is now stable and should be back on her feet soon.

Wow, how important it is to live every day to its fullest. As all we have is ourpast and the choices we will make for our future. ...
I was pleased to learn that my mother went across canada in the 60's hitch hikedand took the train. And lived in varuious places across the country.

So instantly, this made a reason for me todo this trip. It also added a newcause. Promoting healthly active living. My mother smoked a pack a day, andher lungs were black. ... Fully being drained with tubes. ..So now its up to herif she want to live longer, she can't smoke.
I have never smoked and don't plan on it.I don't have a car, because I am doing my part for the environment ... How can I promote using a bike if I had a vehicle? ... A 4 door is ment for 4 people inthe car at all times.

So I realize that with that experience that it will mean more to me doing thistrip because I will be promoting to people across the country to use thedifferent ideas to make a small difference on the environment.

By keeping the car at home 1 day a week.
By car pooling for short and long trips.
By taking the bike out more often.
By investing in personal solar pannels, and ...
By taking an interest in alternative sources for transportation and power.

I'm just 1 person on a bike, and going across the country.
Your just 1 person reading this page on the sea of the internet. Individually Ican't make a global impact, however if everyone reading this, and follows alongon the journey, and does something to help the environment... And tells otherpeople about it. Then together we can change the world.

Cheers,
Sam

Blog Canada Ride For Climate - Why? -Alberta Tar Sands

I'm still working on this never ending project.
Starting with an idea that can link all my skills and interests together.. Seemsto be a bigger than imagined task.
So I'm always looking for help. Those interested, please contact me.

As I am every day reading more and more about the topic... 'Human Impact on the environment'

It makes me ill, reading about the Alberta tar sands. ... How harmful it is onthe environment. ... When simple solutions are readily available.I'm reading in Popular Mechanics -March 2007 edition. ... In the middle of thearticle it splits up and is continued on page 110.The 1st add/article is loud. 'Green Design'.... Why not build homes that aremore efficient. ... You don't need to be a Rocket scientist to realize that theupfront cost of installing materials that are non toxic and use reycledmaterials. ... Certainly worth the cost. ... Having solar pannels on your roofdoes collect power, keeping a battery pack charged and using that for power. Selling acess power to the grid? That makes sence doesn't it?.So why not start?Using your own home as a start. Do something small and managable. ... Likehaving a solar power pad (like i'll e using) laying on my panniers or trailerbehind me. ... It'll be recharging my cellphone while not in use. ... So whynot get one for the home? ... Place it in a spot where it us sunny... A windowsill ... Or on the dashboard of the car? While your in it?Its a small thing. Now if everyone did just 1 thing osative to help like that.... That makes a big difference. So if your complaining about the rising gas price. PLEASE, do your part and bepart of the solution... Then you can complain that more people are not doingwhat your doing. ... That's productuive complaining.Back on topic, I read about the Tar Sands, and think about the auto industry.... A HUGE industry. ... But its moved my INDIVIDUAL people. All who can chose.... So why not buy the car that is most fuel efficient... And not the fastest? It just makes sence for every household to have 2 cars. ... Why not have 1 ofthem the in town car.. And the other the out of town car. ... Carpool to work, and live closer to work? .. If your neighbours go the same direction... It makessence to car pool? ... Share the cost.Do people not realize that the extracting of tar sands only is profitable whengas price is high? ... So I get excited when gas price goes up.Its only then that people start driving smarter. ... Stop idiling and carpooling. ... Treating useing the car as an expence ... And not an asset.. ...Only when you car pool and have others chip in for the cost to fill up the tank.... Then its an asset. ... Money is made. You drive a 4-door? ... Doesn't it make sence to have 4 people in the car???It frusterates me to hear people complain about it, when they can solve theproblem by changing there thinking of the personal transportation device. ...... So you buy a big SUV because you would like to squich a small car and killthe driver, rather than buying a small car, and driving on small roads.. Andonly use the big car when there is more people.OK, so 2 vehicles. ... The SUV with 1 person and the small car with 4 people.... Does it make sence to be the safer one?The SUV driver better take their drivers licence more seriously. ... Say,perhaps loby the DriveTest places to be more strict with larger vehicles?Anyway enough blogging for now.
